I have kept mostly to the keto diet since the beginning of January, with the exception of a team celebration and the occasional micro-brew. So far (and I know my experience will not be the same for everyone), if I keep to a pretty strict diet during the day, I can afford one pint and that not ruin me. I have been seeing noticeable energy improvements, I no longer have the super slump in the afternoon, and don't feel like I need a nap at my desk. I have still been getting ~9.5 hours of sleep an night, but even on days where I don't manage that I don't feel so horrible when my alarm goes off in the morning. I have also been pretty consistent with working to ramp up my running after the ankle injury, but not so diligent in my strength training or yoga. Even so, it appears to be helping! My husband and I went snowboarding recently; in the past I was
always the one to tire out first, but both days HE tired out first! SUCCESS! My energy held up, legs held up, AND I managed to not crash. Even more surprisingly, my ankle held up better than expected, especially considering I ride "goofy" and so that ankle is the one I am putting my weight into most of the time.

Diet wise, I am mostly sticking to meats, dark leafy things, green beans (in moderation), kraut, broccoli, celery, cucumber, summer squashes, Brussels sprouts, peppers, and cauliflower. I have also been having some smoothies - kale, blueberries, some frozen beets (in moderation, just trying to use them up instead of wasting them), almond or peanut butter, and homemade almond or macadamia milk. If I know I will be short protein during the day, I also add a scoop of low-carb plant-based protein powder to the mix. I have found I am starting to not be starving at all hours of the day. Even thought I have always maintained a trim figure and healthy weight, ask anyone who knows me and they would tell you that I eat ALL DAY. I could eat a huge lunch, and be hungry again in a couple hours. Its never really a big deal, I just always carry snacks with me. However, it has been nice to be able to go from breakfast to lunch without feeling the need to eat something. When I am craving something, I have seen my cravings change. Previously, I would crave chips, or something starchy, but it is turning more into fatty cravings, such as olives, cured meat, or cheese. It is certainly true that most keto snacks are more expensive than normal snacks, eventually maybe my need/desire for snacks will calm down enough that it wont be an issue. Don't get me wrong, I can still do some celery and almond butter on the cheap, but its not very transportable.
Speaking of keto snacks - I have a few super easy ones I have grown fond of.
Speaking of yummy keto food, I see pretty frequently the glories of "bullet-proof coffee". All this is is butter melted into coffee to add some fat. Aside from the fact that it does not sound appetizing AT ALL, I can't figure out why it is so popular when there are so many other great options. My favorite at the moment is coffee (decaf) with coconut cream dissolved in. Even straight out of the fridge, a little coconut cream (canned), dissolves right into a fresh made cup of coffee. I think it is a much tastier alternative to the standard bullet-proof option, it gets the fat, and it is something that actually tastes GOOD in coffee, which, lets face it, butter does not - even if its non-dairy butter.
A cold keto drink option I have found is La Croix. Its great! No sweeteners (not even artificial), just sparkling water with a hint of some fruit flavor - grapefruit, lime, orange, and a few more! It is a nice change to something different when you are tired of plain old water. I have also managed to track down one brand of an apple-cider drink that is both low carb, and not trying to make up for it by dumping in a pile of stevia. Most of their flavors are less than 5g carbs, but at least one has 9 per bottle (and a bottle is ONE serving, as it should be!). I love kombucha, but have not been able to find any that are low enough in carbs, so these cider-drinks make a nice alternative.
Hopefully some of these ideas can help you out if you are starting on your own keto journey, they have certainly helped me move away from some of my old-faithful snacks and drinks. If you want any more ideas -- or just some motivation, hit me up on social media.
